Excavators are the machine we move most, and the one where trailer choice matters more than people expect. A compact machine under 20,000 lbs often fits a stepdeck or even a hotshot trailer. Anything larger usually needs an RGN, which drops to the ground so the machine can be driven straight on instead of being lifted.
The number that decides everything is not the weight alone — it is the combination of weight, height and width once the machine is on the deck. A machine that is legal on the ground can become an oversize load on a trailer, and that changes permits, routing and cost.
RGN or lowboy for standard and large excavators. Stepdeck or hotshot for mini excavators under roughly 20,000 lbs.
Driven on under its own power in most cases. Non-running machines are winched or craned, which needs to be arranged in advance.
Cab height plus deck height is what triggers oversize permits. Booms and buckets are usually removed or lowered to stay legal.
Secure or remove the bucket, drain nothing, lock the house, and note any leaks. A machine that arrives leaking can be refused.

Straight answers
Everything from mini excavators around 8,000 lbs to large tracked machines over 100,000 lbs. Under about 20,000 lbs a stepdeck usually works; above that it is an RGN or lowboy, and the largest machines may need to be partially dismantled with the boom shipped separately.
If the load exceeds legal limits — generally 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall or 80,000 lbs gross — then yes, and each state on the route issues its own. The carrier pulls those and any required escorts, and the cost is included in the price we quote you.
It helps but is not required. A running machine drives onto an RGN in minutes. A dead machine can be winched or lifted, but we need to know before dispatch so the right equipment and operator are sent.
